Rhode Island Supreme Court Orders City to Pay Costs in Police Misconduct Open Records Case (4/21/2003). PROVIDENCE, RI -- In the "open records" lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the police department, the State Supreme Court ruled out that the city of Providence, RI, cannot charge a community group for the costs of providing copies of internal police misconduct reports. Executive Director of the ACLU of Rhode Island said that the the court's ruling marks the end in the Providence Police Department's history of arrogance towards those who would seek to monitor its misbehaviour.

An undergraduate research team at Alfred Taubman Center for Public Policy and American Institutions explored three specific areas of public concern: expungement of felony convictions,sealing of civil records, and the records of financial settlements against municipalities.
